Rise, Goddess, Rise
Duration - 45 min (can be presented in shorter segments) Rise Goddess Rise is a Bharatanatyam-based dance production exploring discipline, devotion, and inner transformation within classical Indian dance training, particularly the traditional Gurukula system. Drawing on the experiences of co-creators Kirsten Newell and Oxana Banshikova, both trained at Kalakshetra – India’s premier Bharatanatyam institution – the piece reflects the beauty, intensity, and contradictions of this lineage. While grounded in tradition, it also examines the emotional and psychological pressures embedded in inherited teaching systems. The work asks: how can we honor Bharatanatyam’s depth while confronting hierarchy, discipline, and silence? Through layered choreography, spoken word, and original music, it reimagines tradition as a space of resilience and renewal. Watch promo here Previous performances:
